JUNGLISTIC
JOURNEY
For the next six years I would find
myself embarking on a journey that would establish my name
within the UK Jungle Scene. After sending out mix tapes to
clubs & promoters for three months I finally got my all-important
break in the scene in England. Quest in Wolverhampton the
most popular night in the north of England contacted me and
offered me the warm up slot alongside Fabio, DJ Rap, Stu
Allan and Top Buzz. The buzz generated
for me from this booking was immense to say the least. Although
I was only paid my expenses, which was my train fair, and
hotel that didn’t matter - to be playing alongside
some of the scenes biggest DJs was a huge honour for me.
After that first appearance at Quest I continued to play
for them right up until they closed around 1996. Throughout
my time playing for Quest my reputation spread all over the
UK and it wasn’t long before the phone started ringing
from interested clubs & promoters. Rapidly I began to
build on my CV by playing at some of the most prestigious
events. <Hear Set> <Pictures>
Although I always had a wicked time playing at Quest there
was one time that wasnt so great. After travelling down by
train I met up wth one of my mates and we both spent the
afternoon drinking. I went to play that night and started
drinking this very strong beer called breaker, which mixed
with some kick ass weed, had a fantastic effect on me. I
was standing across one side of the stage and started to
feel like I was about to have a big Casper the ghost. I knew
I had to get out but I couldn’t get out of this crouching
position I was in. Eventually I got my ass up and made a
b line for the steps of the stage but as I reached them I
totally blacked out. Fortunately for me the security standing
at the bottom of the short flight of stairs saw this and
caught me in time. The security sat me down after this and
I kind of managed to get my head together although I still
felt there was more to come. I decided I needed some fresh
air and got myself outside. I could have easily walked to
the hotel from the club but that just seemed to be to much
effort so I found a lane where I lay on the ground for maybe
an hour or more. Believe me when I say I thought I was finished.
I went back and took a picture of the lane the next time
I played to remind myself of the mess you can get yourself
in when you over indulge.
<List Of Gigs & Flyers>
The huge outdoor events in
England were all the rage back in those days and the first
one I found myself on was for
one of the biggest promoters at the time. The Big Love organised
and staged in bath by Universe was a dream come true for
me. Booked to play first on the main stage around 6pm I thought
it would be quiet. But as I made my way onto the stage 10.000
eagerly awaiting faces greeted me and the reception from
them was unbelievable. I hadn’t felt nerves like this
for a few years but believe me they came back very quickly
that evening. <Flyer> <Live Set>
The time I spent playing across
the UK in those early years will always remain very special
to me as it was the beginnings
of the now massive world wide Drum & Bass scene. Wherever
I played the response was always very welcoming. Those years
spent travelling up and down the motorways gave me the opportunity
to build many close relationships with everybody involved
in the industry which would all come into play when the tables
turned in the club scene north of the border.
