RADIO

Over the years I’ve had a reasonable amount of radio work, the biggest and most important for me was my live set from the studios of BBC Radio One on the ‘One In The Jungle Show’ in January 1997. This for me was a dream come true - to be one of the very few Scottish DJs to play live on Radio One, a station I have always listened to. I flew down to London where I met up with Aphrodite, A-Sides & Majistrate, who all came down the studio with me. This experience really helped my DJ career no end in the search for more work, and it also did me huge favours back in Scotland. I was finally booked to play for the biggest promoter in Scotland, Rezerection, who up until then had ignored my talents. The funny thing was I turned Rezerection down on their first approach as I was playing for World Dance at Lydd airport in Kent, although I did eventually play for them at the last ever Rezerection held in Scotland. <Broadcast> <Interview> I have also played and been interviewed on the BBC's new digital channel 1 Xtra on DJ Flights show. <Interview> <Mix>

Although Radio One has been my biggest moment in radio, I had previously played for Choice Fm in Birmingham, which was also great experience. <Broadcast>

However, the majority of my radio work was playing for the mighty pirate station Kool Fm. I played on Kool nearly every time I was in the south of England DJing, this also served as great exposure in the London area, and was such a great laugh too. Trying to find the studio however, normally based in disused warehouses, was a bit of a nightmare at times I have to say! Playing at Kool was also a great meeting place for me, and used my times there to forge relationships with some of London’s big name DJs and MCs. I'm due to play on Kool again very soon when Im down to play at Ram at The End. <Broadcast>

In terms of Drum & Bass/Jungle getting radio coverage in Scotland, it has always proved very difficult. Although I was supported by a radio DJ called Tom Wilson who was very popular in the Scottish rave scene. Tom sadly died in 2004 from a heart attack. He always invited me in for interviews alongside regular mixes for a show called Bonus Beats on the station Radio Forth here in Edinburgh. The first time I was invited to do a mix it was for only ten minutes as Tom wasn't a huge fan of Jungle no matter how hard I tried to convince him.

My prayers were finaly answered when a licence came up for grabs in Scotland in 2000. When new radio station, Beat 106 came to light, I quickly got a proposal together and sent it through. After having a meeting with the station, I was given the job of presenting a weekly show alongside Glasgow based DJ Tania Swift. This for me was a great achievement as it was the first legal show in Scotland for the music. I manged to get an exclusive interview with Tee Bee for the show after he played for us at Manga. Unfortunately, after 7 months the station was bought over by corporate radio giants Capital, who then proceeded to axe several shows, the drum & bass show being one of them.

I have also played and been interviewed on BBC Scotland a number of times and played numerous times on Edinburgh based student station Fresh Air Fm.

Despite Drum & Bass not having much of a say on the airwaves of Scotlands radio stations at the moment, I’m quietly confident that, in time, we will see the music I love back on the airways again, and for good this time!
